Ironman Australia

NZ

Victory was just as sweet the second time for New Caledonian Patrick Vernay, as he crossed the finish line at Ironman Australia, Port Macquarie. Patrick also won the race last year. Women’s winner was Briton Chrissie Wellington, who had set out to prove her Ironman victory in Hawaii last year was not a one-off event.

As athletes crossed the finish after their gruelling 3.8km swim, 180.2km bike ride and 42.2km run, they agreed on two things: it was a tough race and the vocal crowds lining the streets helped get them home. Their support was phenomenal, athletes said.

Great Scottish Run

scotland "Scotland's Running Together" was the theme for this year's Great Scottish Run in Glasgow. By holding three events over the weekend - the Junior 3km on Saturday and a 10km and Half Marathon on Sunday - families and friends of all ages and fitness levels were able to participate.
This year's event drew competitors from as far away as Ethiopia, Eritrea, Japan and Austria and the weather provided perfect running conditions. Kenyan winner Emmanuel Mutai broke the race record, finishing his half marathon in 1h1m10s.
Glasgow takes pride in its "friendly city" label and the run is a great opportunity to prove it. The 10km and half marathon events start at George Square and take in a number of famous Glasgow landmarks, including the iconic Kingston Bridge over the River Clyde, and finishing at picturesque Glasgow Green. Along the way, participants are encouraged by musicians, bagpipers and plenty of cheering and applauding spectators.

Sydney City2Surf

NZ

When it's just 14km from the central city to the sea, the idea of running it seems attractive. A record 70,000 people thought the same in the annual City2Surf run in Sydney.
Beginning at Hyde Park in the central business district, the course heads east past Rushcutters Bay, Double Bay, follows the coast around Rose Bay before crossing the peninsular and heading down to finish at Bondi Beach. Arguably the toughest part is aptly named Heartbreak Hill.
The race began in 1971 as the Sydney equivalent to San Francisco's popular Bay to Breakers fun run.

The climate is mild and the event is ideally combined with a weekend away or a longer holiday on Queensland's sunny Gold Coast.
